What is the biggest missed opportunity yet in the video game industry?

There are a number of actual missed opportunities in the video game industry. There are a ton of great game concepts that simply didn’t come too close to being realized. A great example of this would be Spore – a game that had tons of potential but just ended up being a series of minigames that no-one really found to be that great (I don’t know if that last part was true, I just know that the game ended up not being that great).

Missed Opportunities in the video game industry

  1. Lair: When it first came out (or before it came out) we thought lair was going to be one of the greatest games to ever hit the PS3. It had Sixaxis motion controls from the Dualshock 3 – this actually made the game almost unplayable. Basically, all the features sucked and there was no way to switch from the control method the game came with.
  2. Spore: Coming off of being a game that individuals pre-ordered and at one time thought would be as awesome as Sims and Sim City did. Individuals thought the game would be so much more than a collection of mini-games where everything was centered around dancing and eating.
  3. Simcity: If you’re looking for a game that was nothing but a terrible game (at least the launch was bad), SimCity is the way to go. We thought the game would allow us to cooperate with other players and we’d be able to build huge cities with them – that’s not true. Nothing you build in the game looks the way you would think – none of the cities look as cool, nothing.
  4. No Man’s Sky: No Man’s Sky was a tremendous disappointment. Essentially there wasn’t a whole lot for a person to be able to do in the game. If there were more for a person to do in the game (or some updates to the game) then No Man’s Sky would be awesome. They have continued to have support for No Man’s Sky but it has yet to be the game it should’ve been.
  5. Pokemon Go: Pokemon Go should’ve been much more than it For starters, the game didn’t keep most of its momentum for a few reasons but it had tons of server problems and took a crazy long time to actually make it to market. Not to mention that the design of the game should’ve been much more than it is.
  6. Fable Legends: This one’s a short one – we haven’t a Fable game in a very long time but, have still be blessed with no new game. Yes, they canceled Fable Legends which means we don’t have a new game coming to us.
  7. Scalebound: Yet another canceled game comes our way with Scalebound’s cancellation. There appears to have been a few unforeseen issues with Scalebound and it just doesn’t have a future with us.
  8. Metal Gear Solid V: As soon as the creator of Metal Gear V decided to have a falling out with a major gaming producer things get really shake-y with the game. Essentially, they found that the game was becoming incredibly expensive to create and that they figured they would have to cut out information from the game. They then attempted to sell the information from the game in a master’s edition of the game.
  9. Rare Studios and Microsoft: Why did this make the list? Well, Microsoft did almost nothing with Rare (they did make a few games but nothing like what would’ve been if it were sold to someone else). While we did get games like Sea of Thieves and a Perfect Dark Sequel, that’s nothing compared to what should’ve been.
  10. Half Life 3: Yes, e all wish that Half Life 3 had been announced after the release of Half Life 2 (which was around 12 years ago), however, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
  11. Mass Effect Andromeda: Basically, Mass Effect Andromeda was a very rushed game and had a ton of bugs. Examples of these are the weird running styles of players and the lack of expression on characters faces.

Conclusion

There are tons of missed opportunities in the gaming world. Above we have a few of them but there are still a ton of them left over to be discussed such as Brutal Legend, the lack of a Harry Potter open world RPG.
