History/Plot

Street fighter II was developed in 1990 and was released to the arcade world in February 1991 and was produced by the world’s most famous organization with respect to arcade games, Capcom. It was the sequel of the previously released Street fighter. It had now improved the controls and added multiple playable characters with their different fighting style and command-based special moves distinctive from other player fighting style.

Most of the Nintendo consoles were the way people could access these games. Other than Nintendo you could have also played it on your Sega and Atari’s. People were a huge fan of this game. In several areas and countries of Asia people used to pay money to play this game on Computers. It was the world’s most played game and the largest selling game of its decade. Its improved gameplay and designed were the things that fascinated the players. While playing arcade mode you were basically playing the story mode where you had to fight with other players that were basically handled by the computer.

This helped you improve your game skills. You might think it was 90’s game it would be pretty easy, but I can assure you that it was not easy to defeat the computer even if you had selected Ryu which was the fan-favorite character. So, it was better in handling players, using combos, and it provided you with a vast option of characters to choose from with whom you want to play. This made the game much more enjoyable than its prequel in which there were less control and fewer combo moves.

Gameplay and design

Street fighter II features like its prequel mostly on gameplay. You have to play the best of three fights. During these rounds, you have to make sure to knock out your opponent before he knocks you out or the time runs out. In case of both the players getting knocked out it’s a double K.O. resulting in additional rounds, until sudden death. After every 3 rounds or stages, you get to play a bonus round in which either you have to deplete the car or you have to destroy the barrels rolling down from the conveyor. The fight is in a closely contested space and the characters can move in two dimensions only. While selecting the character you are shown a map of the Pacific with pinpoints that show us the home town of the character.

You need an eight-way moving joystick and a four or six button control so that you can play Street fighter properly using all the combo moves. Unlike the previous Street fighter, you can use combo moves, that are different for all the characters, by applying a certain set of movements of the joystick and pressing certain buttons.

These combo moves proved to be vital in the game and helped you in winning the game if you can connect or land one combo move perfectly. If you can master the buttons and joystick movement for the combo moves you can certainly use some combo moves that cannot be dodged and prove to be fatal within the game. This combo system was later adopted by most of the arcade fighting games like Tekken. Other than playing single-player arcade mode you can also choose the multiplayer mode in which 2 players can play simultaneously. This was more enjoyable as you can defeat your friends and enjoy the game with them. The gameplay of multiplayer is the same as of the arcade single player mode. Due to its gameplay, it was rated an 8/10 by most of the game reviewing website. All the characters in the game are linked to one another by a story and plot. This makes the single player arcade mode more interesting than before and you can actually experience the story as you proceed in the arcade mode.

Conclusion

Capcom’s Streetfighter II was a revolution to the world of arcade games and entertainment. People were star stuck with the game and were very into it. The cloned models were even better than the original game. Its plot and story made it more interesting for the players and also attractive. People wanted fight games and they got a bewildering game that included combo and killer moves like “Haduken” and “Shoryuken”.

Combo and killer moves were a difficult thing to learn, but once you have learned them you could go on to become the undefeated player among your social circle. In those days’ people bought coin operated mini retro machines to play street fighter on them and then conclude who was the best. It is not a matter of life and death, but instead much more than that. These mini contests were very good among friends. Streetfighter II a game of its kind and now they do not produce beauty like these anymore. There was a wave of revolution after the release of Streetfighter II, but then no such wave followed until recently with the release of more arcade games that have developed a better system of combo moves or I better call them ultimate moves. These games still have their ideology based on the Streetfighter II they just have a better perception of what should be done. If anyone to this date provides me an opportunity to play Streetfighter II, I will surely love to give it a try and try to bring back some super moves, I learned back at the time.
